Sunday night, Mr. Gibson and I joined a crowd to see the movie Inception. I’ll avoid all possible spoilers, but needless to say…the movie was much more about a huge concept than about any of the characters. What was the concept? Inception. Can one person be at the origin of an original thought of another person. Can, in other words, Leo DiCaprio break into your dreams and plant a seed that grows into an idea that changes the world when the dreamer awakes?

John Steinbeck, has a good argument against inception:

” Our species is the only creative species, and it has only one creative instrument, the individual mind and spirit of a man. Nothing was ever created by two men. There are no good collaborations, whether in music, in art, in poetry, in mathematics, in philosophy. Once the miracle of creation has taken place, the group can build and extend it, but the group never invents anything. The preciousness lies in the lonely mind of a man. ” (East of Eden, p. 131)

So the question remains… what have you invented lately?
